Tot School Beginnings

I have spent the last couple weeks researching Tot School/Pre School activities, curriculums, schedule and all sorts of wonderful things.

There is a TON of info out there!

For us to get started I thought that I needed a couple of weeks to experiment and see if Bee was ready for more activities and what his current interests are. I'm so glad that I did!

He is ready to learn. He wants to learn. He loves when I show him how to do activities but he more so loves to show me what he can do. He often surprises himself. I have given him activities that he had to struggle a bit with but he found a way to accomplish the activity. Not always exactly the "right" way but he found a way. I really want to encourage his creativity and I think tot school will help direct his play into learning experiences.

Generally speaking I used toys he already plays with independently but I worked with him more to teach other than just letting him explore. We moved to a different spot in our living room so he couldn't see all the other toys. I bought him a tray/table to help him focus. Some times these two changes make a huge difference and sometimes none at all!

What types of activities have we done? How did we change the purpose of play with specific toys?

Blocks - Bee loves blocks. He likes to put them in his block tray. Instead of using the tray we stacked blocks and knocked them down again and again. I flipped the cubes so the same color was showing on the top side. He isn't able to match colours yet but he was turning the cubes looking at the different colors/pictures. We also played hide and seek with them. For hide and seek I brought the tray back out so he would know when he found them all. We counted blocks, lined them up and even just played guess which hand it is in.

Coloring - he loves to draw or at least hold his crayons. We color often. Especially when I am busy working or on the phone. Bee will sit on my lap and color. I have given him his own clipboard, with paper, so he can color away. I originally gave him a box of crayons then 1, 2, then finally 3 crayons. Three is perfect, too much to hold in his one hand but he still has choices. He then has to use both hands or put down one to pick up another. On his paper we trace hands, draw pictures, write letters and focus on his grasping skills. I have tried giving him a picture to color but he turns it to the blank side. To teach colors I have given him only one color but various shades.

Shapes - We have a ball with shape cut outs and also a box. I have used both of them quite often. The box is wonderful. The shapes are all on one side so Bee gets frustrated slower. He has figured out that it is easier to just take the top off and put the shapes in the box. Smartie pants. I love the ball, he is great at putting the shapes in once I rotate the ball to the correct shape. This is a good one for us to work at together. He is getting better at rotating shapes to fit in the holes in right. We are still a ways away from shape recognition.

Language - He doesn't use many words yet so we are still focusing on signing until he is interested in speaking. I am getting better at remembering to take the time to do a few signs with him everyday. He is great at signing milk and walking to the fridge for me to get it for him. We watch Signing Time. Not often mostly when I'm exhausted or need to get something done. He doesn't sit down long but he likes dancing to the music. I LOVE that they sing so many songs. Reading a ton - one day I read "I'll teach my dog a lot of words" at least 50 times. We have now lost it..... When we read I point out shapes, colors, we count and I ask him questions.

Movement - We have started dancing more. It's easier now that I don't have to carry him as much. Freeze movement is where we dance, I press mute and we have to stop til the music starts again. He hasn't quite figured that out yet but he likes to wiggle around. When it's nice we play outside, hasn't happened much since it's January. In the house we climb furniture, run down the hallways and play hide and seek. I even try to incorporate counting.

Life Skills - Bee loads the washer for me, front load, and helps put his clothes away. They end up in all the wrong drawers but he loves it. In the mornings he gets his pants out of the drawer. He also knows to lift his legs individually to put pants on. Bee sweeps my floor. Aka moves the mess around for me. He brushes his own hair, mine too, and brushes his teeth.

Please remember that we DON'T do all of these everyday. Bee loves to play independently so I let him explore for most of the day. I try and help him focus for 10 minutes. Sometimes it turns into a half hour or just 30 seconds. We do our first activity after breakfast around 915am then something else when we wakes up from his nap at 230pm or before his nap at 1230pm. Whatever he needs that day. I try and listen to his needs.

There are many other things that we do and have experimented with. Don't be afraid to try something new. You have to get to know your specific child. His likes and dislikes. We have taken 2 weeks, mostly since half of that time we spent in bed sick, if you need more time take it. If not jump into your own version of tot school. You can do it! Just follow where your child leads you.

When Bee is 14 months we will start learning colors. Check back for what activities we do.

Ps. I will try and do better at taking pictures.

January Happenings

Bee killed Uncle Thomas in this epic battle of wrapping paper tubes.

One of Bees favorite foods is apples, well normally. Today he just wanted to turn his apple slices into a bunch of slivers. They neatly gathered on his pjs..... Silly Bee.
Blocks! Bee loves blocks. He is really good at getting all the blocks neatly arranged into his block cart.

He has decided that he doesn't like spoons. Forks are way cooler!! He likes to stab his food. Even Cheerios! He gets the tines just right so he can pick them up.

Fast forward 15 years and we have a teenager with an attitude.

Bath time is one of Bee favorite times. He loves to lie on his belly and push himself backwards. He is so helpful when i start running the water. He knows every bath needs duckies. Even when I am running a bath for myself he makes sure I have my duckies. He also loves his peanut butter jars. He doesn't need anything other than his jars and ducks. The other day I swear he said duckie..... His version at least.

I Could Sleep All Day

What a week! We finally got back into the wonderful life of routine and then Bee wasn't feeling well.

Sick. Teething. Growing. Combo.

A few days ago I spent a couple hours sleeping in our glider rocking my precious baby. It was not comfortable at all but I loved being able to cuddle with Bee. When Bee is tired he doesn't like to be held, he wants to be in his own bed. That is with the exception of the last couple of days.

He sleeps so good through the night which is a huge blessing! Yesterday he slept all night woke up for a bite of breakfast and ready for a nap. He slept from 730- 700 then 800-1130!!! Holy cow! That's a lot of sleep.

Last night he was falling asleep anywhere and everywhere at 630. Bedtime it is then. He didn't have a very restful sleep but at least this time he was okay with being in our bed. No way was I sitting up ALL night in the glider. Even though he went to bed really early he still slept til 1100. He woke up a couple times but only for a sip of water.

Bee hasn't really been sick before with the exception of runny noses and a little cough. Him being sick has helped me to be grateful that I can stay at home with him. I didn't have to worry about work or daycare. I only have to think about Bee and what he needs today. The house can wait, today we are cuddling and enjoying every moment of snuggles.

We are so very very blest.

Now Bee can get better since I've learned to be more grateful when it comes to being a full time Mum!

Our Educational Journey

Every once in a while an idea pops into my head and won't get out! Generally they come out of no where and I don't know what in the world brought me to this line of thought. I feel as though I have been led towards home schooling. It's important, even though I don't yet understand why.

This thought terrifies me! Home schooling takes organization, lots of organization, time, effort, planning, etc. I did not study to be a teacher, I never had any desire to homeschool. Eek! I have a million thoughts in my head and don't know where to start. Bee is only one. Definitely not old enough for homeschool yet.

I have learned lots during my research and found myself getting more and more overwhelmed. I found a blog that made me feel more at ease. It helped bring things down a couple notches by helping me focus on the more basic things Bee will need to know. I just need to start somewhere.

Tot school. I can start there. Exploring. Colors. Letters. Shapes. Numbers. I can do that.

Tot school is similar to pre school or pre pre school. I don't have to pick a style or technique. I don't have to have activities planned for all day, everyday of the week. I can have activities ready for days that Bee wants more.

The activities I mentioned above do not have to be complex or time consuming. My goal is to have pre planned activities that will last about 10 minutes. I will add a list/links of the activities as we go. If they don't keep Bees attention for that long that's fine. Change the plan.

Life with a toddler means that things change at a moments notice. One of the biggest lessons I have learned is that Bee doesn't follow a schedule. He doesn't know how to read a clock or how to tell when things should happen. He however does follow a routine. Our tot school will simply be added into our daily routine. I'll keep you posted on that.

Our tot school is going to officially start in a couple months. When Bee is 15 or 16 months old. I want him to be able to focus for short periods when he is 18 months.

Why 18 months? When Bee is 18 months he will be attending a program at church on Sundays called Nursery. In Nursery they will have a brief lesson, a simple activity and plenty of play time. I have served in the Nursery and know first hand how beneficial it will be for him to already have the skills to focus for a short time.

My second reason is our second baby will be here when Bee just over 18 months. I am hoping that providing Bee with activities he is familiar with will help during the transition time. Something that we can do together and also something that he can do when I'm busy.

Are you a home schooler? I would love some tips or advice.

I'm not sure where this adventure will take us or where we will end up but for now I am excited to begin.

Wish me luck as my journey begins.

Blue Moon

For those of you that are unfamiliar with the ways of the smurf. Here is some information for you. Baby smurfs are dropped off by storks during blue moons.

The end of June, at our home, we are expecting a stork to make a special delivery. We are hoping that the color is not blue, pinkish white would be perfect. Also if a stork could actually bring the delivery by I would greatly greatly appreciate that.

For Christmas we wrapped up these cute little smurfs for our parents as our expecting announcement. I can't wait for their reactions. I'm sure the Rangers will get the smurfs reference but not so sure about my family.... So we gave them an extra hint. I think we have our families fooled so far but my mother in law is so good at reading people. She might know. I will definitely post the reactions.

*Update: everyone figured it out. The figurine really helped, if it was just the clue they may have been stumped. Rangers didn't expect this but they were soo excited. My side had us figured out. Except my aunt, we tricked her. It was especially funny since she had been joking about the "right" timing coming soon. Too bad we were one step ahead.

We are so excited and I'm glad we no longer have to keep our wonderful news a secret! Hooray for babies!!

Ice, Ice Baby

Our monthly date night was a hockey game.

Lethbridge Hurricanes vs. Edmonton Oilkings

We got slammed! 0 - 7! Ouch. Even though the game wasn't great we still had a wonderful time.

Kiss cam! There was a kiss cam and while I was distracted Jason said it's us! I briefly looked up and I could have sworn that the girl had a blue shirt... Maybe I am crazy, it was only a glance. Of course we kissed. You have to on the kiss cam. Lol. Jason was definitely just being a trickster and faked us being in the cam but I loved it. I love his goofy side.

I can't wait for our next date.
